Professor Sabuj Mallik

Biography

Before joining Buckinghamshire New University in 2024, I served as the head of the engineering discipline at the University of Derby. Prior to this role, my experience includes positions as the academic lead for mechanical engineering at the University of Central Lancashire, as well as roles as a postdoctoral fellow, lecturer, senior lecturer, and principal lecturer at the University of Greenwich.

I studied for my PhD in Engineering at University of Greenwich. My primary research interest and speciality is in multidisciplinary areas of electronics interconnection materials, manufacturing, and reliability engineering. I'm also actively engaged in research related to thermal management using advanced metal matrix composites and reliability engineering. This includes experimental studies involving thermal cycling, highly accelerated life testing, and failure analysis, as well as fatigue modelling of solder joints using finite element methods. I work with collaborators (academia and industries) in the UK but also in Germany, South Korea, Malaysia and India. My international reputation in multidisciplinary electronics interconnection materials, manufacturing, and reliability engineering is supported by 81 publications in top-quality peer-reviewed journals, books, book chapters, and renowned national and international conferences. I serve as editorial board member and reviewer for various engineering and scientific journals and contributed to the organization of multiple international conferences as a member of the organizing and technical committees. I successfully supervised five PhD students to completion.

I am a Senior Fellow of Higher Education Academy, UK and a member and chartered engineer with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). I am also a member and chartered manager with Chartered Management Institute (CMI), UK.

My specialist knowledge has led me to work with world-class industries such as Rolls-Royce and JCB on developing degree apprenticeship programmes in nuclear, aerospace and manufacturing engineering.

My career highlight to date is that I played a pivotal role in a national award-winning partnership with Rolls-Royce Submarines, specifically in the collaboration on the Nuclear Skills Academy (NSA) in Derby, which welcomed 200 new apprentices in September 2022. Leading this cross-institutional effort, I developed a ground-breaking degree apprenticeship program in Nuclear Engineering, the first of its kind. This program aims to ensure the sustainability of the UK's submarines program by cultivating a dedicated talent pipeline at the outset of apprentices' careers. It's supported by industry experts, including the Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, the National College for Nuclear, and Derby City Council, providing apprentices with access to top-tier courses and mentors throughout their apprenticeships.
