Before joining Buckinghamshire New University in 2017, I worked successfully as a graphic designer and art director in a number of design studios, advertising agencies and in-house art departments both in the UK and Australia. Passionate about my subject and now with over 20 years of experience within higher education, I have developed a student-centred teaching philosophy. I promote an intellectual and rigorous approach to design thinking and application, through the use of observation, research methods, questioning, and creative thinking strategies, to develop a learner’s own ability a tackle a diverse range of visual problems.
My research interests are diverse within the area of visual communications, having previously studied typography and motion graphics. Photography has been a long-term passion, and projects have been both individual and collaborative. An example of one such piece is The Boundary Project, which explored crosscurrent themes in the urban and rural landscape, which was exhibited and presented at conferences in the UK, USA, and Australia. Current practice based research projects involve exploring digital, photographic and printmaking techniques to explore, record and realise emotional and atmospheric themes in my surroundings.
I studied for my master’s degree at London Guildhall University. I am also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, have achieved Associate membership of the Society of Typographic Designers and Licentiate membership of the Royal Photographic Society.
