Biography

Before joining Buckinghamshire New University in 2009 I was a commissioned officer in the Royal Air Force, which I joined in 1987. On leaving the RAF I was employed as a corporate security training specialist for three years before arriving at the University.

I studied for my Masters in Security and Risk Management at the University of Leicester and my specialist area of interest is the study of organisational capability in the face of dynamic risk change. It’s interesting because the continually accelerating society and operating environments in which we live continue to challenge businesses and individuals. I am dedicated to developing and educating current and aspiring professionals in all sectors.

As the University lead for military engagement and education, I am dedicated to offering opportunities to current and former military personnel who are seeking to develop their knowledge and capability. This extends to wider involvement directly with military organisations, charities and working widely within the University to support opportunities for service families.

I am a Chartered Security Professional, Fellow of the Security Institute, Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, Honorary Member of the Business Continuity Institute, Senior Fellow at the Higher Education Academy, Member of the Institute of Leadership and Management, Technical Specialist Member of the Institute of Risk Management and Member of the Royal Aeronautical Society. I am also a Member of the Order of the British Empire.

My specialist knowledge has led me to work with multinational organisations across the world on security and crisis management educational programmes.  I have delivered training, teaching and board level management education consultancy in my specialist subject areas, and offer an innovative, action focused approach to solution management for individuals and organisations that are looking to develop resilience in this challenging world.

I have had many rewarding experiences during my career and these continue on an almost daily basis. However, I was especially proud to be awarded the Academic Partner of the Year accolade by the University Students’ Union in 2019, which reflected my efforts and drive towards supporting and developing our most important assets-our students. Although I have not worked with any famous “big names”, I work with people outside the University who make a real difference to society and our security-and I’m proud of that.
