Dr Benjamin Aziz

Biography

Before joining Buckinghamshire New University in 2023, I was a Senior Lecturer at the School of Computing, University of Portsmouth for the period of 2010-2023.  Before that, I worked as a Senior Research Scientist at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory part of the Science and Technology Facilities Council, and as a Postdoctoral researcher at several academic institutes, including Imperial College London, University College Cork and Dublin City University.

I graduated with a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Dublin City University, Ireland (2003) specialising in the formal specification and verification of security properties in distributed systems using process algebra.  Before that, I completed a M.Sc. in Networks and Distributed Systems (1999) from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland.

I am a Fellow of Advance HE (formerly the HEA), and member of several technical bodies, including the IEEE, the IET and the BCS. I am also a member of several academic networks and working groups including ERCIM Formal Methods for Industrial and Critical Systems and ERCIM Security. 

My specialist knowledge has led me to work in several European projects involving a substantial element of research in security and trust management, including FP6 projects GridTrust and XtreemOS and FP7 project Consequence. I am currently an Associate Editor of Wiley’s Security and Communication Networks journal and I am a member of several program committees for international conferences and workshops.

I have a substantial track record of publications, including two books and over 160 peer-reviewed papers and articles published in international venues.  My research interests cover areas of formal methods, software and requirements engineering, Cyber security, the specification and analysis of complex systems (e.g. the IoT and Cloud-based systems) and the application of data science and data-driven approaches to enhance the understanding of systems security. For more details of my research profile, please check my pages at:
