Dyslexia and other Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLDs)

Other SpLDs include; dyspraxia/DCD, dyscalculia, attention deficit (hyperactivity) disorder [AD(H)D] or any combination of these specific learning difficulties.

I know I have dyslexia or another SpLD – what do I do next?
Contact us for a registration appointment. Bring your existing report with you to the appointment. If your report was done before you were 16, you may need a re-assessment. We are happy to advise you on this.

I think I may have dyslexia or another SpLD – what do I do next?
Try the 15 questions on the Adult Dyslexia Checklist. If you put a X in 'Most of the time' and 'Very difficult' most often and you are having difficulties with your studies you may wish to have a one hour screening appointment. In the appointment we will do some further testing to give a probability of a SpLD.

What happens after my screening appointment?
Based on the screening results we may refer you for a three hour assessment on campus with one of our assessors. There may be some exceptions to this referral process for example: if you are near the end of your course or on a short course.

What happens after a full assessment?
If the full assessment identifies dyslexia or any other SpLD we will book you for a registration appointment.

What is a registration appointment?
Our registration appointments lasts about an hour and we use the assessment recommendations to set up your ‘reasonable adjustments’, for example:
  • reasonable adjustments for examinations and TCAs.
  • extended library loans
  • stickers for assignments and examinations so they are marked in accordance with University marking guidelines.
  • disclosure to your Faculty
  • Disabled Students Allowances. (DSAs), we will advise and help you apply for these allowances which may be used to pay for equipment and individual sessions with specialist dyslexia tutors or mentors.
