Counselling sessions

Your first session will last up to an hour, and your counsellor will listen carefully to the difficulties you are experiencing. In the majority of cases counselling is offered for up to six sessions and there are occasions when longer term counselling is offered.

It is important to arrive on time as your counsellor will be working to an appointment system and therefore late arrival will lead to the session being cut short. If you are unable to keep an appointment we ask that you give at least 24 hours notice where possible, so that the appointment can then be used by someone else. Should no notification be received this will be counted as a full session.

Confidentiality
Strict confidentiality is always maintained and is an essential part of the counselling process. No information either verbal or written will be disclosed to academic staff or family, without your express permission. In very rare circumstances we reserve the right to break confidentiality when there is any risk of harm to yourself or others, or we are made aware of serious illegal activities. Even in these circumstances we would normally seek to speak to you first before contacting anyone else.

All counsellors are required to have a supervisor who monitors the quality of their work. The process of supervision is conducted in a way that ensures confidentiality that clients receive the best possible professional care at all times.

Please note that information you provide us in your initial contact from is gathered to aid the efficient running of the counselling service. Notes and records kept are confidential to the counselling service.
