Volunteering & RAG

Three student volunteers
We like to promote various opportunities for voluntary work through the Students’ Union. It provides students the chance to gain extra skills and develop themselves as individuals whilst assisting good causes in our community. The volunteering scheme has enabled Bucks students to be actively involved in the community and gain invaluable experience.

There are short term opportunities that last a day and involve students taking part in tasks as a group. Long term opportunities vary in length from two months up to a year – these require more commitment, but provide greater rewards in terms of self satisfaction and employability.

We always try and match students to a role that is both suitable and enjoyable and through volunteering students develop the skills that employers look for in graduates.

There are also opportunities to get involved in Raise and Give (RAG). RAG is the area of the Union that raises money for charity. Our charities are picked by our students, so it is up to you who you raise for. The key themes of RAG fundraisers are enjoyment and innovation, so being involved is a great laugh! The emphasis is on raising money whilst having fun.

Lucy Spencer said, “During my time here I worked with the volunteering team; I actually got an award for ‘Outstanding Contribution’ for it last year. We took part in the Apprentice Challenge this year, which was nice, and it also brought us into the community.”

Laura Collins said, “I’ve had quite a few different experiences at Bucks, one was volunteering to do sign language, signing Christmas carols in Beaconsfield, and I was the University mascot - Rusty!”
