External library users


The University Library is not open to members of the general public. Only users with bona fide need to use the library will be provided with access. 

To set up access please make sure you visit the library between the following times:

Term time
Monday, Wednesday and Friday - 10am to 4.30pm
Tuesday -10am - 8pm
Saturday - 1pm - 3pm

Outside term time
Monday to Friday 10am - 4pm

If you are unable to attend during these hours please email hwlib@bucks.ac.uk to arrange a time to visit. Once this stage is complete you can access the libraries during full opening hours.
 
Prior to visiting check the Library Catalogue to make sure we have the material you require. To set up access, please visit to the campus reception which holds the information required. Reference access is available immediately. Borrowing access will be set up within 24 hours after completion of the application.

Please make sure you bring your access card and all other required documentation with you every visit.  If your access expires retain the card as it can be updated when you renew your membership (if applicable).

If you are an external library user (i.e. not a student member or a Bucks employee) access to resources is available via a number of options: 
  • Staff and students from other UK Universities (via the Sconul Access Scheme)
  • Members of the public (via the TV Inspire scheme)
  • Bucks alumni
  • Registered external borrowers
  • Retired Bucks employees
  • Regional College/partner employees (please note that registered students of Bucks based at partner colleges are automatically enrolled for use of services)
What can registered users use?
  • Reference access to printed materials (books/journals) - Some categories of membership will allow you to borrow some materials, please see each user type below for details
  • Photocopying facilities within copyright restrictions
  • Guest wireless computer access – for standard internet resources this does not give access to Bucks’ electronic resources
During membership you are subject to library rules and are responsible for any debts or charges incurred (including loss of access control cards).  Users must notify the library of any change of address.

User types and access
 
Please note bookable study rooms are available to Buckinghamshire New University students and employees only.

Staff and students from other UK universities
Access can be obtained via the Sconul Access Scheme. Those with Sconul Borrower categories A, B & C can borrow up to four items. Material can be renewed as many times as needed but will not be renewed if required by another user.  Sconul Borrower category B Ref users can access the library for reference only to printed books/journals.

TV Inspire users
Members of a libraries participating in the TV Inspire scheme can obtain access for four weeks and can use the library for reference use providing access to printed books/journals only.

Bucks Alumni
Graduates of the University can use library facilities for the cost of £45 per year with facility to borrow up to four items. Material can be renewed as many times as needed but will not be renewed if required by another user. 

Registered external borrowers
Annual membership to use the library is £90. Users in this category can borrow up to four items. Material can be renewed as many times as needed but will not be renewed if required by another user.

Retired Bucks employees
Staff who retired from the University (as defined by University Human Resources) will have free access for three years and can borrow up to four items. Material can be renewed as many times as needed but will not be renewed if required by another user. 

Regional/partner college employees
Staff teaching on courses accredited by the University located at nominated partner colleges which are confirmed by Bucks can gain access to facilities, which is available for one year in the first instance. Users under this category can borrow up to four items. Material can be renewed as many times as needed but will not be renewed if required by another user.

Please note that failure to renew material before it becomes overdue will lead to loss of access to online services (renewal, holds and self issue facilities).
