REF 2014
The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is the new system for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education institutions (HEIs) in the period 2008 - 2013 and replaces the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE).
REF will differ from the RAE in several ways, in particular the introduction of the assessment of the impact of research on non-academic users.

- inform the selective allocation of their research funding to HEIs, with effect from 2015-16.
- provide accountability for public investment in research and produces evidence of the benefits of this investment.
- provide benchmarking information and establish reputational yardsticks.
