Application process

You can apply at any time of the year to study for the postgraduate research degrees of MPhil or PhD, on either a full-time or part-time basis. You need to hold:
  • an appropriate Master’s degree or
  • at least a second-class honours degree in a relevant subject from a UK university.
If you hold qualifications other than those above, you will be considered on your merit and in relation to the nature and scope of the proposed research. If you want to apply, you should complete a Research Degree Application Form. Research degree application form.

You must provide details of two referees, at least one of whom must have direct knowledge of your academic work. Only one of your referees can come from Bucks and neither referee should be a partner or family member. Where applicable, we will also need a copy of your first degree certificate.

As part of the application you must also submit a project proposal of up to 2500 words, which is an important and integral part of the assessment.  This should demonstrate your potential to obtain a research degree by undertaking research and writing a thesis; and that the project can be studied to the depth required.

If you are invited for interview, it will normally be with three academics, one of whom will be your proposed main supervisor. If we decide to make you an offer, our aim is to send an offer letter to you within 10 working days of your interview.

Our research degrees are awarded by Coventry University, and any offer will be subject to acceptance by Coventry of your application for registration.

There will also be ethics approval required if the proposed project involves human subjects. If you are not a resident of the European Economic Area (EEA), it is essential to have acceptance of the UK government for your application for a visa to enter and remain in the UK for the duration of the programme.
