OAPs enjoy Christmas dinner served up by students

Big-hearted students put on Christmas dinner with all the trimmings for OAPs from two Buckinghamshire nursing homes.

A total of 15 elderly people from Catherine Court Nursing Home in High Wycombe and Abbeyfield House sheltered housing in Wendover enjoyed a turkey dinner followed by Christmas pudding hosted by Bucks Students' Union.

11 students volunteered and helped out by serving the meals, chatting with the visitors and singing Christmas carols.

Manager Pauline Delpoio, of Catherine Court Nursing Home, in Cressex Road, High Wycombe, said the residents had felt 'really at home'.

She added: "We all really enjoyed ourselves and we would like to thank everyone again for such a lovely afternoon. All the students were so kind and the residents felt really at home."

Kathleen Gilroy, House manager at Abbeyfield House, in Dobbins Lane, Wendover, said: "A big thank you to all the students for a most enjoyable afternoon. All the residents had a wonderful time and enjoyed the attentive company of the students. The food was also top nosh!"

One of the Abbeyfield residents, Ron Saunders, celebrated his 85th birthday and was presented with a mince pie cake, with students and other care home residents and staff singing him happy birthday.

Kathleen added: “Ron had a big grin on his face right into the following day. It was a great gesture.”

Alice Dewsnap, Volunteering Coordinator at Bucks Students’ Union, said: “We’re pleased the elderly residents enjoyed getting into the festive spirit at Bucks New University. It was a rewarding day for all concerned.”
