Bucks Students' Union launches Community Guide for students

Buckinghamshire New University's Students' Union has come up with a Community Guide to High Wycombe to help students live safely in the town, with financial support and advice from Wycombe District Council and Thames Valley Police.

The 30-page guide includes advice and useful contact numbers for activities such as energy saving and volunteering in the community, as well as details about High Wycombe, its nightlife and how to keep their accommodation safe from crime and free of fire risks.

The booklet also contains details of who to contact in the event of domestic abuse, and stresses the importance of putting rubbish out regularly for collection and recycling, as well as providing details of where to go for medical assistance.

Superintendent Gilbert Houlla, based at Wycombe Police Station, helped to launch the guide, alongside Wycombe District Council’s Cabinet Member for Community, Councillor Katrina Wood, in Roberts Road, High Wycombe, near the University's Hughenden Road Halls of Residence, on Monday 16 January.

The guide has been produced and will be available at the University's Campus in Queen Alexandra Road, High Wycombe, as well as at libraries, council offices and police stations, and posted through students’ doors.
PCSOs Lauren Brown and Simon Sanghera, who cover Wycombe Town Centre, helped to distribute the guide at the launch. PCSO Brown is also studying BSc (Hons) Police Studies with Criminal Investigation at Bucks New University.

Supt Houalla, said: “This guide is not a nice to read, it is a must read. Having a university in High Wycombe is a huge asset for the town and I want to ensure that the students stay safe and out of trouble.

“I’d like to welcome the students into the town as part of the community and want to make sure that high spirits, stay this way, and do not develop into anti-social behaviour and criminality. This guide is a good resource to help provide information about not only staying safe but the effect some actions can have on neighbours in the area.

“We hope that with our partners we can give good advice on the dos and don’ts to help make the time spent at university an invaluable experience for the right reasons.”

Councillor Wood said: “This publication is a great, all round survival guide for students. We want students to keep safe and while enjoying their time living in the Wycombe district and hope that the advice offered in the guide will help to point them in the direction of help and support, should they need it.”
Professor Ruth Farwell, Vice Chancellor, Bucks New University, added: “Working in partnership with other organisations, such as Wycombe District Council and Thames Valley Police, is one of the fundamental issues which this University stands for and goes towards how we work with our local community to make it a safe and good place to live.

“It is important that we are considerate neighbours and ensure that we deliver on our promise to think of others and play an important role in the community in High Wycombe.

“I am really proud of what our students do at the University and the positive contribution they make to the community, particularly their volunteering activities, and this Community Guide to High Wycombe is illustrative of how seriously we take our role.”

Alice Dewsnap, Volunteering Coordinator at Bucks Students' Union, said it felt the guide was an important must-have for students.

She said: "We have been aware for some time that something like this was needed and this guide could be the difference between a student running into trouble away from home or having a document on hand that ensures they have the best advice available, the most important numbers to call, and are well aware of any dangers which may occur during their time here.

"We are also keen to ensure that our students do not cause the local community any problems and we hope that this shows how importantly we respect our relationship with our neighbours in High Wycombe.

"Of course we want people to have fun and enjoy their time at University and do not want to cause any undue concern
, but equally it's important to have a handy guide so our students keep safe."
