Award-winning music filmmaker Dick Carruthers spent two hours delivering a master class for students at Buckinghamshire New University and offering tips on forging a career in the industry.
A total of 30 students applied on a first-come first-served basis to quiz Dick on his career, which has seen him film the likes of Keane, Oasis, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Take That and Beyoncé.
Stephen Partridge, course leader for BA (Hons) Film and Television Production, said the opportunity to speak to Dick had been ‘invaluable’ for students.
He said: “To gain such insight on key methods, techniques and approaches to filming live music will of course prove to be of significant benefit to all attendees. They all greatly appreciated the time with Dick.”
Dick said: “The students were all very clued-up technically and interested in exploring many aspects of the industry and how to pursue a career. It was great to speak to students who are interested in doing similar things to those I have done and share my professional knowledge with them.”
Matt Salter, studying BA (Hons) Film and Television Production, said the session was ‘inspirational’. He said: “Dick has literally done everything that I would like to do in the industry. He’s someone I can look up to and aspire to emulate so to have these two hours with him has been fantastic.”
Fellow student Donald Smith said: “It was eye-opening to listen to what Dick had to say and how he built his career and to appreciate that anything is achievable. He’s worked with so many big names that I like and was also happy to share his technical knowledge. It’s been very beneficial.”
