Introduction
Our sports partnership between Bucks New University and Ashridge Business School creates a unique delivery of education in sporting leadership, from a legacy coaching programme at sub degree level, to an innovative postgraduate programme delivering all of the knowledge and skills needed to support the developing coach. Produced by a combined team of Ashridge and Bucks academics and coaches, the programme enables coaches at any level to access these requisite skills and aims to create and promote a pathway of lifelong learning in sport.

Legacy Coaching Programme
The Legacy Coaching Programme identifies the skills, knowledge, process and behavioural competencies for a coach to enable others to achieve great things. This will leave a lasting legacy, not just in the world of sport but also across families, communities and workplaces.

The Legacy Coaching Programme benefits individuals, organisations and communities. Employers can sponsor individual staff through the Bronze, Silver or Gold Legacy Coaching Programmes. Legacy coaches can then work effectively with their teams or others within the organisation. In addition, through the programme they are encouraged to use their coaching skills as volunteers with local sport, charities and other clubs in their community. So the programme helps organisations to achieve their CSR ambitions as well as developing staff to improve their own and others’ performance within the business. The individual gains valuable skills they can use throughout their life. Local groups will also benefit from volunteers who can help them achieve success, whatever their goal. Each level in this programme is a one day course.

Bronze – Coaching the individual; giving them confidence, identifying key challenges and goals and providing the support they will need on their journey.
Silver – Coaching teams; focuses on forming a group of people into a team with an inspiring purpose, common goals and shared values.
Gold – Coaching for leaders; the role of the coach as a leader who is self aware, has their own ‘leadership DNA ’ and is inspirational to others.

World Class Sports Coach Development Programme

This annual programme is one of Sport Business Initiative’s core programmes, aimed at increasing participant’s effectiveness in leadership and management, through self discovery and application of new behaviours, knowledge and attitudes. Through a series of modular master classes, it covers many topical areas that have proved to be key in the development of successful practices at a senior level in sporting organisations. Each master class combines theory, debate and opportunities to test out the application of new skills and behaviours in a low-risk environment.

This programme is led by Ian Bell and John Neal from Ashridge Business School.  For more information about the programme please contact Ian or John on 01442 841 478 or visit ashridge.org.uk.

PGDip Leadership and Management / MA Leadership and Management
This well-established and successful programme extends over 26 months and comprises two parts. The first includes six, two-day intensive residential workshops and requires participants to complete two pieces of work linked to your work in sport development and coaching: a Reflective Portfolio and a work-based Project. The residential workshops includes expert presentations, are highly interactive, case and problem-focused, and also includes extensive use of action learning approaches both in and between workshops. On successful completion of stage one, participants can opt either to continue to the master’s stage or to leave with a postgraduate diploma (PGDip) qualification. The second part of the programme is devoted to the completion of a dissertation. During this time participants are supported by one-to-one tutorial supervision and guidance, and by involvement in voluntary action learning sets and cohort meetings. Both the focus and form of the work-based project and the dissertation are decided through negotiation. Students will apply theory to practice in the sport industry.

These programmes are led by Professor Patrick Smith from Bucks New University.
