£1,500 cash plus the equivalent value in direct support

If you’re a UK or EU student enrolling for the first time on a full-time undergraduate course that starts in September 2009, the fee for tuition will be £3,225 a year.  But the good news is that under new Government legislation, neither you nor your family will be required to pay up front. Instead, you will be able to take out a loan to cover your tuition fees, which you won’t have to pay back until after you graduate.

Student tuition loans are very different from loans that are offered by banks or building societies.  For a start, you don’t have to begin repaying the loan until you’re earning at least £15,000 a year.  You will repay 9% of anything you earn over £15,000 gross per year before deduction for Income Tax, National Insurance etc.

As a guide, if you earn an annual salary of £19,000, you would pay 9% of £4,000, or £360 in the year. This would be £30 per month.
